This Magnificent Antique early XIXc Russian Orthodox
Travelling Icon depicts Pokrov –
the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God & Saints.

the travelling icon is performed in brass & enamel
(blue, sky blue, yellow, green, white) –
Enamelling in a very good condition
The inscription on this icon is written
in Old Church Slavonic (pre-revolutionary Russian Cyrillic)
and reads “Образъ Покрова Пресвятыя Богородицы,”
meaning “Icon of the Protection (Veil) of the Most Holy Mother of God.”
It refers to the Orthodox feast of the Protection of the Theotokos (Pokrov),
commemorating a vision in Constantinople
where the Virgin Mary appeared and spread her veil
over the faithful as a symbol of divine protection.
The scene traditionally depicts
the Vision of St. Andrew the Fool-for-Christ,
who witnessed this miracle inside a church.
This theme became especially beloved in Russian Orthodoxy,
where the Pokrov symbolizes the Mother of God’s spiritual guardianship over believers and the nation.
Dimensions: 17.3cm x 9.8cm
Superb & quite rare,
as there are only a few icons that illustrate that particular subject
