This Magnificent Antique early XIXc Russian Orthodox
Travelling Icon depicts Vladimir Mother of God (Vladimirskaya Theotokos)
This icon represents one of the most revered images
in Russian Orthodox tradition.
It belongs to the Eleusa (“Tenderness”) iconographic type,
in which the Christ Child presses His cheek affectionately
against the Virgin Mary, symbolizing profound maternal love
as well as the foreknowledge of Christ’s future suffering.
The delicate embrace, intimate facial expression,
and the Child’s arm wrapped around Mary’s neck are
characteristic features of the Vladimir icon prototype,
originally brought from Byzantium to Russia in the 12th century.
Featuring intricate details,
the travelling icon is performed in brass & enamel
(blue, sky blue, yellow, green, white) –
Enamelling in a very good condition
It’s framed by a rich floral border –
typical of Russian devotional icons produced in the 18th–19th centuries
for private prayer and household veneration.
