This charming Damascene Japanese lacquer cigarette case is dating to 1930s
Damascene is a decorative technique
where intricate gold or silver designs are inlaid onto a dark metal surface,
creating rich contrasting patterns.
This piece is made of brass, decorated in silver gilt with a picturesque landscape:
featuring traditional pavilions, Mount Fuji, and stylised trees.
The rich black lacquer surface contrasted with delicate golden decoration reflects
the refined aesthetic of the late Taishō to early Shōwa period
Compact yet elegant, the case was designed to hold cigarettes
securely while serving as a fashionable personal accessory.
Cigarette Case is 8.3cm wide &
of rectangular contoured curved "breast-hugging" shape - to be carried in a breast pocket
Today, it remains a nostalgic example of pre-war Japanese decorative craftsmanship,
blending practicality with miniature scenic art.
In original beautiful condition
Comes with year 1938 calendar with some hand-written notes
