A finely modelled Russian porcelain figure
of a Seated Peasant Musician with Accordion,
produced by the Gardner Factory, Moscow, late 19th century,
capturing a moment of relaxed rural leisure.
The figure is shown perched on a simple bench, legs crossed,
absorbed in playing a small concertina,
lending the composition an intimate, narrative quality.
His attire is rendered with notable sensitivity:
a soft white tunic with red-trimmed neckline falls in gentle, naturalistic folds, partially covered by a rich brown cloak that
drapes heavily over his shoulders and down his back.
The voluminous grey trousers are modelled with convincing
weight and creasing at the knees, while the tall black boots,
slightly worn at the soles, add an element of realism and everyday life.
The colour palette is warm and earthy,
combining soft whites, muted greys, and deep browns,
contrasted by the lively red and blue patterning of the concertina/accordion.
His face is carefully painted, with a gentle, contented expression,
slightly upturned gaze, and softly defined features framed by a beard and cap.
Dimensions: H: 17.5, W: 11, D: 10 cm.
The underside bears the red overglaze factory mark
with the Imperial double-headed eagle and “Гарднеръ в Москве”
(Gardner in Moscow),
confirming production during the period
when the factory operated under Imperial patronage.
