This finely modelled antique Imperial Russia porcelain figure 
of a peasant musician – balalaika man – is dating from late XIX century,
yet is in great original condition, 
produced by the Imperial Porcelain Factory – 
a Gardner manufactory of Moscow. 
 
The figure depicts a bearded man in traditional attire playing a balalaika,
his stance relaxed against a tree-stump support – 
a characteristic narrative device in Russian genre sculpture.
 
The underside bears the red printed factory mark with the Imperial double-headed eagle 
and “Гарднеръ в Москве” in Cyrillic (Gardner in Moscow), 
confirming production during the period when the factory 
operated under Imperial patronage.

The figure is rendered in a lively, naturalistic style, 
with careful attention to facial expression and posture, 
conveying a sense of quiet musical engagement.
 
The costume - comprising a pink kosovorotka-style tunic 
with delicate dotted decoration, loose blue trousers, and tall black boots – 
is painted with soft, matte enamels and subtle shading.
 
The balalaika is crisply modelled, with incised string detailing, 
while the tree-stump support is textured to imitate natural wood. 
 
The restrained yet expressive palette, combined with confident modelling, 
exemplifies the high standard of late Gardner production.
