RARITY
This 1892 South African Gold Pond is one of the most
historically significant early South African gold coins,
issued during the presidency of Paul Kruger before the Boer War.
Struck in 22-karat gold,
it served as the official currency of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek
and became a powerful symbol of independence and national identity.
The sought-after “Single Shaft” variety is especially prized
for its distinctive reverse design and historical importance.
Its rarity stems not only from age, but from survival —
many original Pond coins were melted, heavily circulated, or lost over time.
This PCGS-certified AU55 example is particularly desirable,
retaining strong detail and attractive original character
while remaining fully authenticated.
Today, high-grade certified Pond coins are increasingly difficult to source,
making them highly appealing to collectors of rare gold,
South African history, and investment-grade numismatic pieces.
