This superb Orthodox / Church Slavonic Antique Russian Icon 

is a devotional icon of the Mother of God 

“Всех скорбящих Радость” - “Joy of All Who Sorrow”
(also The Joy of All the Afflicted”)

 

Tempera on Wood Panel, Hand-Painted 

 

Depicting the Virgin as intercessor for the afflicted, 

surrounded by angels, saints, and supplicants, 

with Christ Pantocrator above

 

Featuring an inscription in Cyrillic: 

“We have no other help,
we have no other hope,
except You, O Gracious One (Blessed One)
You are our help;
in You we place our hope,
and in You we glory.
For we are Your servants—
let us not be put to shame.”

 

This magnificent icon depicts: 

 

The Theotokos (Virgin Mary) standing full-length on a cloud

Christ Child on her left arm

Radiant mandorla / rays of light emanating from her figure

Groups of suffering people around her: the sick, the poor, the blind, the lame, prisoners, widows

Angels assisting and interceding

Saints shown on both sides, often Russian monastic saints

Christ Pantocrator in heaven above, blessing from the clouds

 

On either side you can see named saints, written in Church Slavonic

 

Probable region - most likely:

Central Russia

 

Icon’s is dating back to late 18th century – early 19th century,

circa 1780 – 1830
