This Magnificent Antique XIXc 1890 Russian Silver Icon
is hallmarked 84 zolotnik, Moscow,
bearing an assay mark of Anatoly Apollonovich Artsybashev &
maker's mark in Cyrillic “B.C.”
for Vasily Semenov - Василий Семёнов –
who was a renowned silversmith of Moscow &
a father of Maria Semenova - Мария Семёнова –
one of the most prominent silversmiths of Imperial Russia,
specialised in enamelling work,
which was on par with Faberge & Ovchinnikov…
The icon depicts Pokrov -
the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God & Saints.
The protecting veil of the Mother of God surrounds everybody
with a scared omophorion,
giving divine protection, security, safety & grace.
It protects from an evil eye, misfortune & any trouble.
84 silver riza / oklad is incredibly detailed:
(every tiny crease of clothing is clearly visible)
with halos, meticulously detailed & finely engraved,
angels’ wings, Saints’ sleeves & other pieces of clothing crisp &
showcased with exceptional attention to details
Underneath is fully painted,
with faces of the Mother of God & Saints intricate & so lifelike…
